Hey, all! My computer is with the IT guy, but I hope to have it back and ready to use this evening. Happy Independence Day! People here have been wishing me Happy Independence Day and asking what we do to celebrate in the U.S. Yesterday Nargiz (the friend from my earlier post) took me to order new lenses for my new eyeglasses frames. Soon I will look like a Kyrgyz girl! I also went to the market and bought eggplant, bell pepper, some nasty margerine that I mistook for butter (oh, well, now I know how to say "butter"), and some cherries for about $1.80. You guys who know me well would be so proud: I have been cooking a lot. I made my own pesto a few days ago!!! I found a little flat-bottomed cup to crush the pine nuts and then just chopped the basil and garlic as tiny as I could and added a splash of oil. It is actually pretty delicious!
Saturday, our work is having a picnic! We're meeting at the office and riding in a van up into the mountains. There will be a live sheep that someone will slaughter and roast, and all the food will be provided. I am to bring my camera and that's it. :) I am so excited! I'll take lots of pics and hope to be able to upload them promptly. FYI, I do have several photos all ready to upload on my machine as soon as I get it from the IT guy. Poor Vlad has not had a single day without my bugging him since I got here, but he's patient.
Well, I should let my coworker get back on his computer. More from me as I can get access!!

Rebecca,
Yes, Happy Independence Day to you, too. :)We, of course, are going to Dwight's & Joel's. Gerry & Henri are there. Alison in Houston just bought a new-to-her condo and started a new job, so she couldn't come. It's her first 4th of July not to be at Granny's & Granddad's. :(
Your picnic sounds like so much fun!! Isn't it the middle of the week there? Is this a special occasion? I can hardly wait to see your pictures and hear all about it. Take some bug spray, and wear layers. You might even take some extra socks in case your feet get wet. (Yes, of course you have guessed by now...it's the mama.)
LA&F,
Mama
Rebecca,
OOPS! I didn't read carefully... You are going on the picnic on Saturday. Even so, is this outing a special occasion?
As always, LA&F...
Hi,
I'm finishing a degree at UW, and I'm headed to Kyrgyzstan myself in September for a Fulbright. I understand that you know Shoshana (through Eli? whom I don't know). I thought I'd introduce myself, and maybe grab lunch together or something if you're still there when I get there.
Incidentally, one of the other guys doing a Fulbright in Kyrgyzstan this coming year is working with Mercy Corps, and has in the past too.
Also, if you like poker, you might consider joining some of my friends for the Central Asian Studies Group poker circle when you get back to Seattle. We've been meeting roughly once a week (Fridays or Saturdays) since about January, and we eat plov and besh barmak and play poker :)
