More Picture Highlights

Today we lay around the beach again and ate at the great cheap place on the beach again. Tomorrow is a big day b/c we're doing an all-day excursion to Phang Nga Bay to see James Bond Island and a gypsy village and some sea grottos. I can't wait! In the meantime, here are some pics from today.

The Food

The food here is super great. We get a free breakfast every morning with our vacation package. No room service breakfast, but if we go down to the restaurant, they seat us and ask whether we want coffee or tea. Their earl grey is super good.

There is a huge variety of food. There's some weird stuff like salami-looking sliced meat and little gerkin pickles, sliced smoked fish, and a variety of cheeses, including blue and brie. Then there's a yogurt and cereal area with lots to choose from. There is a ton of fresh fruit, so I gorge on that every morning. There's fresh pineapple, mango slices, papaya, grapefruit sections, bananas, lychee, and some fruits I don't recognize. There's an area with lots different kinds of bread (and rolls and pastries and muffins) and a toaster and really good butter and several different kinds of jam, including a bitter marmalade, which is my favorite. There are warming containers with hot food like bacon, broiled tomato halves (I eat a ton of these...yum), sauteed mushrooms, and herbed roasted potatoes. There's also an egg area with a nice man who will cook you an omlet or fried or scrambled eggs to order. You tell him what you want, and he'll cook it and have it brought over to your table. Last, there is a juice area with fresh-squeezed orange, carrot, and pinapple juices. The juicer and fruits and carrots are right there, and when the containers get low, they juice more right there. The juicer is super quiet, so it's cool instead of startling or annoying.

The first couple of days, we ate like pigs at breakfast and then had an early dinner. Yesterday we had all three meals. The Kata Barbeque restaurant is a much cheaper lunch option than the fancy hotel restaurant, and the variety is good. You will not believe this, but Tony has ordered a cheeseburger there and a chicken sandwich! Crazy man... He said they were good, and I'm glad he can get Western food when he craves it. I've gotten prawns in red curry sauce and a spicy salad with tomatoes, cilantro, prawns, glass noodles, and extremely hot peppers, which I mistook only once for little green beans. Whew, it is not a mistake you'd make twice.

We've eaten in the fancy hotel restaurant twice, and I think we're starting to get the hang of it. Our "free dinner" coupons are worth 1,000 Baht off dinner or a free dinner if you order a set meal. The first night, we ordered an expensive set meal, not the free one, and the food was delicious but tiny portions, and it all ended up being a lot more expensive than we bargained for. Last night we ordered a la carte, which turned out to be a smart option, since we like relatively cheap dishes like pasta (Tony) and vegetable curry (me). In fact, we used only one coupon, which I didn't realize we could do, and paid the 200 Baht over instead of losing 800 Baht by using two coupons. Anyway, the whole dinner experience is lovely there, so it's great to have figured out how to better afford eating at the hotel restaurant.

The hotel restaurant has a lovely deck right off the ocean, and on clear nights like last night you can sit out there and watch the sun set behind Crab Island. It was beautiful. They have two layers of white linen tablecloths and white linen napkins. The waiters pull out my chair and put the napkin in my lap. There are candles on the tables in hurricane glass so they don't blow out. And at the end of the meal, they bring little wooden boats with an orchid for decoration and rolled up cool, eucalyptus-scented washcloths to wipe our hands. (Tony's chest is sunburned, and we joked about his unbuttoning his shirt and laying the cool washcloth on his chest and hearing the sizzle as the water and eucalyptus oil hit his skin.) When they bring the check, they also bring a red rose for the lady. It's really fancy and nice. We have such a good time.

Day 2 in Thailand

It was a wonderful, relaxing day today. We just lay out on the beach most of the day, though we also discovered a cheap restaurant on the beach, which is a major highlight, since our meal today was significantly cheaper than last night's dinner in the hotel, and the food was great. I'll write more text and stories tomorrow, but below are some photo highlights of our day.

Lovely beach shot under the red umbrella

Pretty views from the beach chairs

We're here safely!

We’re here safely and having a wonderful time! The flights were pleasant though long, of course, and we arrived here at Mom Tri’s Boathouse last night around 1:30 a.m. We flew Korean Air, and the leg from Seattle to Seoul was on a huge, super nice plane. Tony had a window seat, and I was in the middle next to a small woman from Korea who seemed really nice. We had our own little screens in the backs of the seats in front of us and way more room than usual. I could completely straighten my legs with my feet just under the seat in front of me. The food wasn’t too great, so we didn’t eat much on the flights. We arrived in Seoul exhausted from watching movies and playing games the whole flight instead of sleeping, so we walked around the airport and took some pictures. I went to an “Experiencing Korean Culture” area in the airport and made a traditional handicraft—for free! It was fun. (And, mama, if you want it for your school kids, you can have it and the bag that explains the traditional use.)

Here's my Korean handicraft

We felt like ordering #29 on this menu in the Seoul airport

Ahhh, the exhaustion. This is us in the Seoul airport, ready to sleep to Phuket

I saw the coolest thing ever in a bathroom in the Soule airport. In the women’s restroom, there is a little box at the back of the toilet seat, and the seat is covered with clear plastic like the kind that shopping bags are made of. There is a sign in the stall in every language known to woman that says to press the red button before using the toilet. So I did, and the clear plastic moved around the seat so that fresh plastic was covering the seat and old plastic was crumpled into the box at the back of the seat! Amazing, huh??? (I still couldn’t bring myself to actually sit on a public toilet, but that cover is a great idea!)
As soon as we boarded the plane in Seoul to get to Phuket, I popped a sleeping pill, put on a sleeping mask, and put in ear plugs. I was asleep before all the passengers had finished boarding the flight. I don’t even remember take off. Tony slept most of that flight as well though not as thoroughly b/c he was woken up by flight attendants who wondered if we wanted food or drink. Nope, just sleep, thanks.
Here I am dreaming of a bed...

When we got to Phuket, it took a long time to get through the customs line, but once we did, our bag was right there waiting, and a driver was standing right by the door with “Rebecca Walton, Mom Tri’s Boathouse” on his sign. In the limo, there were cool washcloths and bottled water. It was about a 40-minute drive, but we were bleary with exhaustion, and it was uneventful. When we arrived at the hotel, a nice young man was waiting for us and gave us our coupons for massages and dinners and stuff and walked us to our room, which is so pretty. There were fresh orchids everywhere.

Here is a potted orchid and our plate of fresh fruit (replaced daily!)

Orchids on our pillows and white sheets and comforter

The orchids in the vase are real, and there are toiletries and goodies as well

This morning we woke around 7:30 and had breakfast and then changed into swimsuits and sat on the beach reading books. I ran out into the water and walked back and forth along the beach a few times. The water is slightly cooler than the air, which is warm and very humid. The morning was totally cloud covered, but it was warm and pleasant. At noon the sun came out, and it’s bright and sunny now. Hooray! The waves are really big this time of year, and almost everyone in the water is there to surf. It makes a lateral walk along the beach through the crazy waves super good exercise.

Squinting into the sun... It had been so long since we'd seen it

After that, we went back to the room and sat out on the balcony, and then I used the first of my NINE massage coupons! We got nine 50-minute massages each in the spa here included with our vacation package. Man, it was amazing. Literally from scalp to toes, I got all massaged and feel so relaxed. Not to be a prude, but I’d worried a little about the naked part, but you can wear comfy loose clothing if you prefer, so I wore yoga pants and little tank, which was perfect. That way I could really relax. Now we’re checking email and resting up, about to head down to dinner. The rain hit, and there is wild rain and wind, which we’re enjoying from the balcony. We’ve gotten our sun for the day and escaped unharmed, thanks to lots of sunscreen. (No worries, mama!)

Here's more view...

That's it for day one! We'll post again tomorrow and try to get some good beach pics. Love and miss you guys!

Packing for Thailand

Tony and I are packing up for our Thailand trip. Heidi is taking us to the airport tomorrow at 11 a.m., and we are almost completely packed. Just the last few things for our carryons: iPods, passports, little details like that. :-) We leave tomorrow and fly for a couple days before reaching Phuket. From the time we leave to the time we get back, it's 20 days. Wheee! We're taking swimsuits, shorts, and sundresses (for me, not Tony), and it is so wonderful not to pack scarves, jackets, or sweaters. It's 57 degrees in Seattle right now. Ugh.

Speaking of weather, we've been checking the weather for Phuket and are all worried b/c everything says "thunderstorms, thunderstorms." But when we read people's personal blogs or the travel ad websites it says that there's a 10 minute to 2 hour rain every day and sunshine the rest of the day. Sites like weather.com just say thunderstorms. Hmmm. After this miserably gray, gray, gray and cold spring in Seattle, we are really hoping for some sunshine. We'll keep you posted...
